A Guide for Confession

Before Confession

1. Ask for help

“O God, help me to make a good confession. Give me the grace to know my sins, to be truly sorry for them, and the strength to avoid them in the future.”
2. Examine your conscience

Inside the Confessional Booth

Step 1
Greet the Priest. You begin your confession by making the sign of the cross saying

"Bless me Father for I have sinned. It is |how long ago| since my last confession. These are my sins.
Step 2
You tell your sins to Father. Be sorry for your sins and remember God loves you. You are talking to God whom Father represents. You may conclude by saying “For these and for all sins, I am truly sorry"
Step 3
Listen to the words of the Father. He will tell you to do something special to show God how much you love Him. This is called Penance.

Step 4
You say a prayer telling God you are sorry for your sins. This is called an Act of Contrition.

“O my God, I am very sorry that I have sinned against you because you are so good, I will not sin again.”
Father will pray for you and say the words of forgiveness. This is called Absolution. While Father prays, God forgives us.
After Confession
Do your Penance. Thank God for the Grace of the Sacrament. Ask for grace to be faithful and good.
