Warriors For the Good

The Legion is headed by the Concilium located in Dublin, Ireland. Below the Concilium is the Senatus, followed by the Regia, the Curia and the Praesidium – the basic unit.

Each Praesidium comprises 4 officers:
The President
The Vice President
The Secretary
The Treasurer

…and of course, the members, who are also known as legionaries

Legionaries fall under the guidance of a spiritual director who is usually the parish priest. In Peninsular Malaysia, there is 1 Regia, 17 Curia and some 200 Praesidia, while in the Petaling Jaya district, there are 3 English-speaking Praesidia in the Chruch of the Assumption. They are:

  • Queen of the Assumption Praesidium
  • Queen of Peace Praesidium
  • Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Praesidium

In St. Ignatius Church (SIC), there are 4 English-speaking Praesidia. Together, these 7 English-speaking Praesidia form the Mother of the Church Curia. There are also 3 Mandarin-speaking Praesidia in the Church of the Assumption and 3 in SIC.

Work of the Legion

Evangelization – spreading the Gospel of Christ - and sanctification – spreading His graces to others – are the key apostolic work of the Legion. Our members carry out a program of prayer and service.

The Legion of Mary is the largest apostolic organization of lay people in the Catholic Church. It has over 3 million active members, worldwide! It is modeled after the Roman Legion army to wage a spiritual war against Satan.

How the Legion Works

Every Praesidium meets once a week. At the meeting, members pray, report on the work they have carried out the previous week and are given an assignment for the following week. Members always work in pairs.

Membership and Duties

There are 4 classes of membership – Ordinary, Praetorians, Auxiliary and Adjutorians.

Ordinary members have 4 basic duties:

  1.  Show punctual and regular attendance at weekly meetings of the Praesidium
  2. Report on work completed
  3. Daily recitation of the Catena
  4. Perform substantial active Legionary work
  5. Preserve the absolute secrecy in regard to matters discussed at meetings

Praetorians carry out the same duties as the Ordinary members with the addition of

  1. Performing more rigorous prayer services
  2. Attendance at daily masses and communions
  3. Daily recitation of some form of Office, e.g the Divine Office approved by the Church

Auxiliary membership is open to priests, the religious and the laity who are unable to assume the duties of active membership.

Adjutorians are a higher level of Auxiliaries. Their duties are similar to the second part of the duties taken on by the Praetorians.

How to Join the Legion

The 1st step is to be a guest or observer at a meeting of the Praesidium. A copy of the Tessera will be given to each observer, free of charge, but he or she will have to purchase the handbook. Guests are always welcome and may participate in one of the work assignments with an experienced member if they choose to. After 3 months of probation, the candidate will be formally enrolled into the ranks of the legionaries by taking the Legionary Promise and become an ordinary member.
